I recently mentioned a new book called The Quest for the Perfect Hive by Gene Kritsky. Good historical account including forest beekepers, skeps, box hives, bars, frames and bee space, bee houses and beekeepers paraphernalia. Brief mention of the top bar hive but no mention Abbé Émile Warré (Beekeeping for All/L'Apiculture Pour Tous) and his similar bee-friendly approach (what is sometimes called non-Rationalist trends in beekeeping). Overall the book is a very informative account of bee culture by an entomologist and beekeeper.
Look out for Honeybee Democracy by Tom Seeley. Due out September/October with much information on the nest-site preferences of bees living in nature. £20.95 UK or $30 USA. Maybe cheaper on Amazon?
If anybody is looking for an informative introduction to the honeybee then The Hive by Bee Wilson and Sweetness and Light by Hattie Ellis will provide it. Well reviewed and I can confirm the content of both books is excellent.
It is also surprising that no mention of Abbé Émile Warré is made by Eva Crane in World History of Beekeeping and Honey Hunting or Bees and Beekeeping. Anyone any comments on these books? or can recommend any other books. I am currently re-reading The World of the Honeybee by Colin Butler.
Does anyone read books anymore?? |

I posted an earlier comment about books with some suggestions as I find books extremely useful.
Phil Chandler in his podcast of April 15 2010 Local Groups, Books and Volcanic Ash also recommends prospective beekeepers (and beekeepers) to read books.
I note that my earlier post had a 170 views but no replies!
Does this mean that people are not reading books?
However here is another one for TBH enthusiasts The Tropical Agriculturalist-Beekeeping by Peter David Paterson.
C. J. Tredwell and Peter Paterson developed these hives back in the 1960s. |

Few people read books and can reply about books.
They prefer having have hard time beekeeping than thinking on a good and big book. |

If "good and big books" are too much for you or members of the forum I have another suggestion "The Queen Must Die And Other Affairs of Bees and Men" by William Longgood, a beautifully written book that will take the hard work out of your beekeeping. Quite why beekeeping is hard work I have no idea! The concept of natural beekeeping is minimal interference. I think this book would offer a lot to many members of the forum and might save them asking other more experienced members to "spoon feed" them!
To quote Mr. Longgood, the book "It is not intended as work of science or a manual of beekeeping. It is an effort to capture some of the mystery and poetry that I have observed in bees, and to enlarge our conception of the importance, beauty, and universality of all life"
Have a go! |
