Newbee here. Last week inspecting a 1 month old hive from a package of bees, I found 12 to 15 shb larva on my bottom board. I went into the hive and saw one small hive beetle. I put in a trap for them. This morning that same hive seems to be completely outside the box hanging from the eve of the lid of my hive.
Should I try and drop them into a box and move them into another TB hive that I have that is empty at the moment? So I can go into the hive and see whats going on?
I just can't see one shb or even a few doing so much damage in one week to make the hive swarm? |

Ok update. I decided to go and try and drop them into a box just incase. When I got down to there, the beard was only about half the size. I got them into a box and opened up the hive. Top bars are full of bee's, 10 fully combed, 2 with parcel comb and the 13 is still empty.
So the question is now, why did they come out and hang from the eve of the roof? |

That would be my guess.
What is your roof made of? Do you have insulation above the bars? |

Roof is make of 1/4 in. plywood, and I have a 1/2 in. sheet of Styrofoam board attacked to the inside roof. I noticed today that the Styrofoam board blocked the vent you would normally have at the ends of the top bars, so I cut it back a little so air could flow up and over the bars.
As for heat, they were out and bearding around 9 to 10 am this morning. Don't think it had gotten that hot yet, although the sun hits on the hives at about 7:30. |

Conserving wild bees
Research suggests that bumble bee boxes have a very low success rate in actually attracting bees into them. We find that if you create an environment where first of all you can attract mice inside, such as a pile of stones, a drystone wall, paving slabs with intentionally made cavities underneath, this will increase the success rate.
Most bumble bee species need a dry space about the size a football, with a narrow entrance tunnel approximately 2cm in diameter and 20 cm long. Most species nest underground along the base of a linear feature such as a hedge or wall. Sites need to be sheltered and out of direct sunlight.
